From Clovis to The Grand Canyon

13 November, 296 miles to Walmart in Grants, NM

On the road the rest area we had picked for lunch was closed, so we just pulled over to the side and ate like a few others.

The Budweiser Clydesdales passed us on the way to somewhere in a hurry!

There were lots of scenic rocks to see.

14 November, 335 miles to Trailer Village – Grand Canyon National Park

Kim was up early to catch the sunrise at the Walmart in Grants, NM.

It was a good day to drive.

We passed this beauty!

Cool big rocks!

And we finally got to Trailer Village Park at the Grand Canyon!

Clovis, NM

11-12 November 2017

From Witchita, we drove 289 miles west to Clovis, NM.  I came back here to visit Canon AFB.   I was stationed there from 1992 to 1997.

We stayed at Bolt RV Park on the east side of Clovis.  It was just a place to park, not much else.  I’ve been looking for a place with Putt-Putt.  No luck so far.

I went to look at our old house.  I loved the front porch and the wide central hall in this house.  We also had a giant tree in the front yard which is no longer there.  Terrible!

We looked around and I didn’t really recognize most of the town.  It was like I had never been there before.  Same for the base.  I got a pic of Matthew and Ian’s old school.

I was disappointed in our visit.  Wasn’t really anything here any longer that I knew.  We did have a great steak dinner at K-Bob’s.

Driving For Food

Today was a travel day and it was Kim’s turn to drive.  Originally we thought we would spit the days driving but we have gone to alternating days.  My plan for 250 to 300 miles a day has made it easy to alternate.

Unluckily Kim’s turn came when we needed to get through Dallas.  We actually just had to skim the outsides a little.

Our destination for the day was to get to a Cracker Barrel in Wichita Falls, Texas.   The manager was really nice to let us stay.  She was very welcoming!

We did 257 miles and had a good meal then fell asleep.

A Day Off

We stayed a day at Shallow Creek RV Park planning to ride around and see what there was to see.  Well, there wasn’t much to see around Tyler, Texas so we wound up stopping at the Country Tavern.  Their menu was limited so they didn’t even have a printed menu.  The waitress just listed the available meats and vegetables.  I heard brisket, potato salad, and beans and went with that.  Kim got Bar-B-Que Turkey, Potato Salad, and Spicy Macaroni and Cheese.  The macaroni turned out to be too spicy so I had that too.  Kim’s turkey was enough that she got a doggy bag and had turkey sandwiches for lunch the next two days.

Now the thing is after you have ordered with no menu and you’re sitting there you start wondering how much it all cost.  Well, it was over $40.00!  It was pretty good though.

We found a chip in the windshield.  Not happy about it but insurance will fix it

Rainey Day

Started out the morning in Pearl, Mississippi.  We left there and soon crossed the Mississippi River into Louisiana.  From there it began misting and by the time we entered Texas it was raining pretty good.  Somehow the cap of one of our air pressure senders spun off and we got a tire alert.  Good to see it was just the cap and the battery and not an issue with a tire.

Our alarm system goes off for all cats.

We made it through the rain to the Shallow Creek RV Resort in Gladeville, Texas.  We did 300 miles today.

Finally We Are On Our Way!

We left today for our Thanksgiving Tour.  We went west through Pensacola and into Alabama.  Kim refused to go through the Mobile Bay Tunnel so we took the hazardous cargo detour.  We then turned north to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and finally came to a stop outside Jackson.

We traveled 310 miles in five and half hours. Pretty good for no hurry.

We’re spending the night at a truck stop all tucked in with other motorhomes.  What else do you want to know?
